Responsive website design for compatibility on mobile devices

Responsive website design, also known as cross platform mobile development, is becoming essential as more users access websites from a mobile device. Responsive website design means using code that gives the design the flexibility to change shape, orientation and layout. This flexibility means the website changes for optimal performance on different devices / screen sizes, platforms and browsers.

For example, when viewing the website on a mobile phone; the images will be resized to fit the smaller screen size automatically. The system adjusts the actual size of the image and not just the display size so that mobile users save on bandwidth usage; font / font sizes may decrease to allow for better reading (but not so small as to become unreadable); Elements being displayed side by side on a desktop may be adjusted to now display underneath each other on a small screen size; and the navigation may change from being displayed on the site, to a menu that is intuitive to mobile devices. This will reduce the amount of space taken up on the screen and make navigating within the site much easier.

Functionality unique to use on mobile devices can also be incorporated such as the ability to access google maps and to click on a phone number and be able to immediately make a call (when using a mobile phone).
